How Close Must a Phone Be to an NFC Card? What the NFC Forum Says About Range
Customers who hold a phone a hand's width away from an NFC card and see nothing often decide "it does not work". The standards body behind the technology states how short the NFC card range really is, and it is worth designing around.
What the NFC Forum says
The NFC Forum's technology overview (nfc-forum.org) states:
- Typical range: up to 2 cm.
- Certified compliant range: 5 mm.
- Tag types: five different NFC Forum tag types, which differ in protocol and data layout but behave the same overall.
- What a tag holds: a specially formatted data payload (an NDEF record). When a device reads it, the device starts an action, such as opening a website or starting a phone call.
The page also notes that NFC can transmit power, which is why tags can work without a battery in products like packaging and apparel.
What this means in practice
- A tap means close. Customers need to bring the phone to the card, not wave it from across the counter.
- Tell people where to tap. A short line on a stand, such as "Tap here", removes guesswork.
- Test with several phones. The antenna sits in a different place on different models, so try a few before you set up a counter.
- Always offer the QR code too. Not every customer taps; a printed QR lets them scan with the camera at a normal distance.
I have not found a UAE-specific range test, so measure on your own counter with your customers' phones rather than relying on a general figure.
Cards versus stands
A card is handed over or held in a customer's hand, so the tap distance is easy to control. A stand fixes the position, which suits counters and tables: customers learn where to tap. The Google Review NFC Stand with QR (AED 59) pairs the tap area with a QR code on the same stand, and for people exchanging details, the NFC Business Card (AED 79) is handed directly so the tap happens in hand.
A quick counter test
- Tap a stand with your own phone and one other model.
- Try it with the phone in a case.
- Scan the QR code at normal reading distance.
- Watch where customers actually try to tap, and move the stand or the label if needed.

Common questions
Does a thicker card or stand change the range? The NFC Forum page gives a general figure and does not cover specific products, so test the actual stand. Do customers need an app? Our product pages describe the tap and the QR scan as working without an app or account. Is 2 cm a guarantee? No, it is a typical figure, so allow for variation between phones.
