ChatGPT Only Recommends 1.2% of Local Businesses It Evaluates — A New Report Shows Most Get Excluded, Not Just Ranked Low

STSmaacaad Team · 26 Sep 2026 · 3 min read

A new 2026 Local Visibility Index from SOCi, which analyzed nearly 350,000 business locations across 2,751 multi-location brands, found something that should worry any UAE business owner counting on Google reviews alone: ChatGPT recommended only 1.2% of the locations it evaluated. Gemini recommended 11%, and Perplexity 7.4%. Google's own local 3-pack, by comparison, surfaced the same brands 35.9% of the time.

The gap isn't really about ChatGPT being harder to please in some general sense. It's about how it decides who to mention at all.

AI assistants don't rank businesses low. They leave them out entirely.

The report's most useful finding is also the most actionable one: AI platforms treat reviews as a confidence threshold, not a ranking gradient. Locations that showed up in ChatGPT's recommendations averaged 4.3 stars. Locations sitting near 3.4 stars, or with review response rates below 5%, weren't ranked lower — they were excluded from the answer entirely, as if they didn't exist.

That's a meaningfully different problem than classic Google SEO. On a Google Maps search, a 3.9-star business still shows up, just further down the list, where a patient customer might still scroll to find it. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity "best [service] near me" or "who should I hire for [job]," and a business below the confidence line simply never gets said out loud — not second, not tenth, just absent.

Why this matters more this year than last

This threshold effect is landing at the exact moment more people are actually asking AI these questions. ChatGPT alone passed 1 billion weekly active users in 2026, up from roughly 400 million about eighteen months earlier, and a large share of that growth is people using it for exactly this kind of "who should I hire" or "where should I go" query instead of typing it into Google. For a UAE salon, clinic, restaurant, or repair shop, that's a new discovery channel opening up right as an old one (Google's own Q&A tab, killed earlier this year in favor of an AI answer tool) is closing.

None of this is Google-specific anymore. It's every AI layer a customer might ask before they ever type your name into a browser.

The part every UAE business owner can actually control

You can't lobby ChatGPT for a better placement. What you can control is the one input the report says decides whether you clear the bar at all: a healthy volume of recent, genuine reviews with a real response rate attached. A business with 12 reviews frozen from two years ago and a 3.5 average is exactly the profile the SOCi data says gets excluded. A business that's steadily adding reviews and replying to them is the profile that clears 4.3 stars and gets named.

The practical bottleneck for most small UAE businesses was never that customers are unhappy — it's that a happy customer, standing at the till or table, has to think of it, find your listing, and type a review, and most never get past step one. That's the specific friction a Google Review NFC Card with QR (AED 29) is built to remove: a customer taps their phone or scans the code, and your Google review page is already open, ready for them to type while the good experience is still fresh. For a counter or reception desk that wants the same one-tap prompt standing up and visible to everyone walking in, the Google Review NFC Stand with QR (AED 59) does the same job at eye level.

Neither fixes a genuinely bad rating, and neither should be used to cherry-pick only happy customers — Google's own 2026 review policy explicitly bans that. What they do is lower the friction on the honest ask, consistently enough that your review count and response rate keep moving in the direction that both Google's local pack and, increasingly, the AI layer sitting on top of it are now measuring.
