Meta Just Cut Threads Loose From Instagram for Businesses — Why That Changes How You Should Link to It
Meta made a change to Threads this month that is easy to miss in a settings menu but changes something real about how a small business should think about the app. Threads business profiles now get dedicated, task-based access controls managed directly inside the business portfolio — separate from whatever permissions are set up for the linked Instagram account. Alongside it, Meta also removed the requirement for a matching Instagram account to run Threads ads at all: a business can now advertise on Threads with no Instagram profile behind it.
Meta's own explanation of the change is blunt about the direction: “Threads profiles feature dedicated, task-based access that you can manage directly within your business portfolio.” Existing Threads profiles keep whatever permissions they inherited from Instagram for now, but going forward the two are managed — and can be staffed — separately. Meta is framing this around Threads' own growth, now past 500 million monthly active users, and the rollout is happening globally over the coming weeks, though not in every region on day one.
Why this matters more than it sounds
Until now, a lot of small businesses ran Threads on autopilot: whoever managed the Instagram account just also had access to Threads, and the same content got cross-posted without much separate thought. That setup made sense when Threads' access was literally tied to Instagram's. It stops making sense the moment Meta gives Threads its own permission structure and lets it take ads with zero Instagram involvement — because that is Meta telling businesses, in the clearest way it can inside a product update, that Threads is not a feature of Instagram anymore. It is its own channel, with its own audience behaviour (shorter, more text-led, more conversational than Instagram's visual feed) and now its own admin controls to match.
For a UAE cafe, salon, clinic or boutique, the practical question this raises is simple: does your business currently give customers, staff, or a marketing hire any dedicated way to find and manage your Threads presence, or is it just riding along on the same QR code or NFC tap that goes to your Instagram? If it's the latter, that's not wrong exactly, but it's now a gap between where Meta is pushing the platform and how your business actually points people to it.
The honest fix: give Threads its own front door, without waiting on a dedicated card
No catalog — ours included — has caught up with a Threads-specific NFC card yet; the platform's business tools only just decoupled this month. The workable move in the meantime is a card that isn't locked to one platform's link at all. A MyInfo Digital Business Card (AED 29) or an All-in-One NFC Business Card with QR (AED 59) both work as an editable link hub rather than a fixed pointer to one app — you set up the destinations yourself and can add or swap a dedicated Threads link the moment you actually start treating it as its own channel, without buying or reprinting a new card. That is the real advantage over a single-platform tap card right now: the card stays useful as Meta keeps splitting its apps into separately managed businesses, instead of going stale every time a platform's structure changes.
- Check who currently has access to your business's Threads profile — if it is still just "whoever has Instagram access," set it up as its own assignment under the new task-based controls.
- If you plan to advertise on Threads, you no longer need an Instagram account to do it — don't let a missing or inactive Instagram profile stop you from testing a Threads ad.
- Point customers at your digital presence with a link hub you control yourself, not a single hard-coded platform link, so a change like this one doesn't mean reprinting anything.
None of this means dropping Instagram or treating Threads as a priority over it — for most UAE businesses Instagram is still where the customers are. It just means the free ride of Threads quietly inheriting Instagram's setup is ending, and the businesses that notice first are the ones who already have a flexible way to point people wherever their channels actually are.
