Google Killed the Business Profile Q&A Box. Its Replacement Reads Your Reviews Instead.

STSmaacaad Team · 28 Sep 2026 · 3 min read

For years, the Q&A box under a Google Business Profile was where a curious customer could type "do you have parking?" or "is this halal?" and, if you were paying attention, you'd answer it yourself. Google shut that door. It stopped accepting new Q&A submissions on 3 November 2025, then began phasing the public Q&A section out of live listings from 3 December 2025 onward, with the rollout continuing over the following months.

In its place: Ask Maps, a Gemini-powered conversational feature that launched in the US and India on 12 March 2026 and expanded to more than 150 additional countries by August 2026, including Canada, Australia, Brazil, Indonesia, Japan and Mexico. Instead of browsing a list of nearby results, a user can type or speak a specific question — "which cafe near me has decent WiFi and takes walk-ins after 9pm?" — and Ask Maps returns a written, AI-generated answer with matching businesses plotted on the map, not just a ranked list.

Where does the AI's answer actually come from?

This is the part that matters for a business owner, not a search-marketing footnote. Ask Maps doesn't have its own opinion about your business. It generates its answer by reading your business listing, your photos, your menu or product data, your website content — and your reviews. When the old Q&A box existed, a business could shape its own answer in its own words. That option is gone. Now the raw material Google's AI draws on to describe you, recommend you, or leave you out of an answer is whatever your customers have actually written about you in public.

A business with twelve short, generic reviews gives the AI almost nothing to work with. A business with eighty detailed reviews mentioning specific dishes, specific staff, specific fixes to a problem, gives the AI a much richer, more accurate picture to answer from — and a better chance of being the business Ask Maps actually surfaces when someone asks a specific question.

What this changes, practically

  • Review volume and detail now double as your Q&A content. You can no longer type a direct answer for a prospective customer; you can only make sure enough real customers have already answered similar questions for you, inside their reviews.
  • The moment right after service is the only reliable moment to collect that content. A happy customer who is asked to leave a review while they're still at the till, table or counter is far more likely to actually do it — and far more likely to mention something specific — than one who's asked by email two days later.
  • A stale or half-filled profile is now a bigger liability than before. Ask Maps also reads your listing data and photos directly, so gaps there feed a thinner, less confident AI answer about you.

This is exactly the gap a Google Review NFC Card with QR + Logo is built to close: a customer taps or scans at the counter and lands straight on your Google review box while the experience is still fresh, instead of being asked to remember later. For a shop or salon with a fixed checkout point, a Google Review NFC Stand with QR + Logo does the same job standing on the counter, working on its own without staff having to ask every single customer.

The honest caveat

None of this guarantees Ask Maps will ever mention your business by name — Google hasn't published the exact ranking logic behind it, and it likely never will in full. What's verifiable is simpler: the AI's answer is built from your review text and listing data, not from anything you can write directly anymore. A business that keeps that raw material thin isn't just missing star ratings — it's giving Google's AI less to say about it, full stop.
