Google Maps Now Asks Visitors to Sign In to Read All Reviews: What a Dubai Business Should Check

STSmaacaad Team · 8 Oct 2026 · 3 min read

If you rely on Google reviews to win customers in Dubai, one reported change is worth five minutes of your time. According to a post by Obrofy dated 4 October 2026, since 30 September 2026 Google Maps has been asking people to sign in to a Google account before they can read every review on a business profile, sort them, or leave a new one. That makes Google Maps reviews sign in a practical question for every owner: what does a visitor who is not signed in actually see on your listing?

What has been reported (and what has not)

Obrofy says the search community spotted the change on 30 September and that Google has not published a formal announcement. The only official signal it mentions is an in-app message telling users to sign in to read and search through every review and photo. Obrofy also notes that a similar restriction appeared in February 2026 and was rolled back about five days later, so treat this as a developing story rather than a settled rule. Its claims about why Google did it are the author's inference, not something Google has confirmed.

According to the same post, a signed-out visitor still sees:

  • the overall star rating and total review count
  • a few reviews that Google picks by default, usually the “most relevant”
  • your replies to those reviews
  • review highlights and keywords

Obrofy says there is no sign the change affects local pack rankings, only how customers see reviews. The post does not say how the change looks on phones in the UAE, so check your own listing rather than assuming.

Test your own listing in two minutes

  • Open Google Maps in a private or signed-out browser window and search for your business name.
  • Note which reviews appear first. These are what a signed-out visitor is likely to judge you on.
  • Check that your top visible reviews are recent, specific and answered by you.

What this means for a Dubai business

If visitors see only a handful of default reviews, those few carry more weight, and so does your total count and star average. Obrofy’s own advice for businesses is practical and fits UAE shops, clinics and restaurants alike: reply to recent reviews with specific answers, ask customers for detailed reviews that mention the service and the location, and send a direct review link right after the job or meal is done.

The weak point for most businesses is the last step. A customer who is happy at the till rarely goes home and searches for your listing. A card or stand that opens your review page in one tap removes that friction. The Google Review NFC Card with QR is AED 29 per piece, handy for staff to hand over at the end of a service. For a fixed spot at the counter or reception, the Google Review NFC Stand with QR is AED 59. Both link to your own review page; what customers write is entirely up to them, and no card can promise a review.

Keep it clean

  • Do not offer discounts or freebies in exchange for reviews; Google can remove reviews tied to incentives.
  • Ask every customer, not only the ones you expect to be happy.
  • Reply to reviews yourself, in plain language, within a few days.

Whatever Google decides to do next, the groundwork does not change: a steady flow of recent, detailed, genuine reviews, and an easy way for happy customers to leave one.
