TripAdvisor Bans Incentivised Reviews: How a Dubai Restaurant or Hotel Can Ask Guests the Right Way

STSmaacaad Team · 6 Oct 2026 · 3 min read

For restaurants and hotels in Dubai, TripAdvisor still matters because tourists check it before they choose where to eat or stay. Many owners are tempted to offer a free coffee or a discount in return for a review. That is exactly what TripAdvisor prohibits. This guide covers the rules on TripAdvisor reviews Dubai businesses should follow, and a clean way to collect more of them.

What TripAdvisor does not allow

TripAdvisor's review integrity guidance says it is against its guidelines to offer or promise anything in exchange for a review, regardless of the rating. Its examples include free drinks, discounts, entry into a contest, or a donation to a cause in the customer's name. Businesses that are found offering incentives can be penalised, and TripAdvisor describes flagging a listing with a visible notice when it suspects faked or incentivised reviews.

What it does allow

TripAdvisor encourages businesses to ask all customers to write reviews and share feedback, as long as there is no incentive or compensation attached. The key words are all customers. Choosing to ask only guests who seem happy defeats the point of an honest review profile.

A compliant routine

  • Ask everyone. Make the request part of the standard farewell, not a decision made case by case.
  • Offer nothing in return. Not a dessert, not a discount on the next visit.
  • Make it easy. Most guests will review only if it takes seconds. Every extra step loses people.
  • Reply to reviews. Thank good ones and respond calmly to bad ones. Prospective guests read the replies.

Where an NFC card helps

The difficult part of asking is the friction after you ask: the guest has to open the app, find your listing and navigate to the review form. A TripAdvisor NFC card links directly to your review page. The guest taps the card with an NFC phone or scans the QR on it and lands where they can write the review. No searching, no typing.

Nothing about the card is an incentive. It is simply a shortcut, so it fits within the rules above.

Smaacaad options

The TripAdvisor Review NFC Card with QR is AED 29 per piece at the time of writing, and the TripAdvisor Review NFC Stand with QR is AED 59 per piece. Prices come from our live product list; confirm on the product page before ordering.

Placement ideas

  • On the table with the bill for restaurants.
  • At hotel reception during check-out, and in the room beside the welcome note.
  • With the receipt at tour desks and spas.

A card cannot guarantee a good review, and it should not try to. It makes sure the guests who want to share an experience can do it in a few seconds.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Asking only after a compliment. Selective asking skews your profile and is easy for platforms to notice.
  • Staff pressure. Standing over a guest while they type makes the review less honest and the guest less comfortable.
  • Copying reviews from other platforms. Each platform expects reviews written on that platform.
