Google Search Console Now Tracks Instagram Performance — What That Means for UAE Businesses Building a Following

STSmaacaad Team · 23 Sep 2026 · 4 min read

Most business owners still think of Instagram and Google as two separate worlds — one for followers, one for search traffic. Google just made it a lot harder to keep believing that. In July 2026, Google rolled out a new feature in Search Console called Platform Properties, announced by Search Console product lead Moshe Samet, that lets creators and businesses connect an Instagram, TikTok, X, or YouTube account and see, for the first time, exactly which Google searches are sending clicks to their posts.

That's a genuinely new capability — Search Console has always shown how a website performs in Google Search, but until now it had nothing to say about content living on a social platform instead of your own domain. The rollout started in July 2026 and reached general availability by the end of that month.

Why this feature exists in the first place

Platform Properties only makes sense because of a quieter change Google made in 2025: public posts, Reels, carousels, and videos from professional Instagram accounts (business or creator, owner over 18, account set to public) became eligible to be indexed and shown directly in Google Search results by default. Most business owners never noticed the setting change, buried under Settings → Privacy, because nothing about their day-to-day Instagram use looked different. But it meant an old assumption quietly stopped being true: your Instagram post is no longer just visible to your followers and whoever your reach algorithm decides to show it to. It can now also be the thing a stranger finds when they search Google for something your post happens to answer.

Search Console's new report is Google essentially saying: this is real enough now that we'll show you the data on it — clicks, impressions, top-performing posts, and the actual search queries driving people to your Instagram content, the same way it's shown website owners their search traffic for over a decade.

What this actually means for a UAE business

For a small or mid-sized business in the UAE, this closes a gap that used to separate "social media" from "SEO" as two different jobs with two different budgets. A café's Reel of its new menu, a salon's before-and-after carousel, a boutique's product photo with a good caption — all of that content now has a plausible second life as a Google search result, on top of whatever reach it gets inside Instagram itself. And unlike most SEO work, it costs nothing extra: it's the same post, doing a second job.

But there's a catch that makes this relevant to more than just your content strategy: a post from an account with real, active followers and genuine engagement behaves differently in this system than a post from a quiet, thinly-followed account. Engagement signals are exactly what search and discovery systems use to decide what's worth surfacing — that's true inside Instagram's own algorithm, and it's a reasonable bet it carries weight in how Google treats indexed social content too. A business with 40 engaged followers and a post nobody interacts with is starting from a weaker position than one with an actively growing, tapping-and-following audience, even if the caption and photo are identical.

The honest way to build the following that feeds this

This is where the case for making it effortless to follow your business in person gets stronger, not just as a vanity-metric play but as groundwork for search visibility you don't have to pay for. The businesses growing their Instagram following fastest aren't relying on hashtags or ads — they're converting people who are already standing in front of them, at the exact moment goodwill is highest, into a follow with zero friction.

That's the specific job Smaacaad's Instagram NFC Follow Card with QR and the countertop Instagram NFC Follow Stand with QR do: tap the card on any modern phone, or scan the printed QR as a fallback, and the customer lands directly on your Instagram profile with the follow button already in front of them — no searching for your handle, no typos, no losing the moment between "I like this place" and actually hitting follow. Every follow gained that way is one more person your future posts reach, and under Google's 2026 indexing rules, potentially one more search result your business shows up in.

What to actually do about it

  • If you run a professional Instagram account, check Settings → Privacy to confirm public content is eligible to appear in search results, and check whether Google Search Console's Platform Properties report is available for your account yet.
  • Treat your next few Instagram posts as content that might get found on Google, not just inside the app — a clear caption describing what's actually in the photo or video helps both audiences.
  • Put a physical, one-tap way to follow your account at the counter or table, so growing the audience that makes all of this worth doing doesn't rely on customers remembering your handle later.

None of this replaces a real content or SEO strategy. But it's one more reason the smallest, cheapest piece of the puzzle — making it effortless for a happy customer to follow you — is worth fixing this year, not eventually.
