Google Maps Now Bans Promotions, Pricing and Calls-to-Action in Your Listing: Where a Dubai Business Should Put Them Instead

STSmaacaad Team · 25 Oct 2026 · 3 min read

On 6 October 2026, Search Engine Roundtable reported that Google had rewritten the advertising and solicitation section of its Maps and Business Profile prohibited-content policy, after a LinkedIn post showed before-and-after screenshots. The new wording says a listing itself cannot carry promotional or commercial content such as time-bound promotions, pricing or direct calls-to-action. Posts keep narrower limits: contact details and unrelated links are out, but offers and updates are still allowed there.

What this means in plain terms

Your business name, description, categories and attributes are now meant to describe the business, not sell it. "Al Barsha Dental Clinic - 20% off whitening this month, call now!" is exactly the kind of name and description Google is targeting. Google already discouraged this in older guidance, with examples like "Everything on sale, -50%", so the October change formalises a rule rather than inventing one. What is new is that it now sits in the prohibited-content policy, which is the one Google enforces by suspending profiles.

What to remove from your profile this week

  • Business name: anything that is not your registered trade name. Drop "Best", "Cheapest", "Open 24/7", discounts and area keywords stuffed in for ranking.
  • Description: prices, "from AED" figures, limited-time offers, "book today" and "WhatsApp us now" lines.
  • Services and products sections: a listed price for a service is a grey area. Keep descriptions factual and move promotional pricing out.
  • Photos: images that are really adverts with a price and a deadline on them. Photos of the shop, the team and the work are fine.

Where that content belongs now

Offer posts. Google's Offer post type has a start and end date, a coupon field and a link. That is the only part of the profile designed to carry a time-bound promotion, and the rewrite leaves it in place.

Your website and WhatsApp. Prices and calls-to-action belong on pages you control. A customer who taps the website or WhatsApp button has already chosen to hear your pitch.

Your counter. The most effective call-to-action in a Dubai shop was never in the Google description. It is the stand by the till that says "Tap to review us" or "Tap to follow us". Google's rules govern what you write on Google, not what you put on your own counter, as long as you are not offering anything in exchange for a review.

Why Google is doing this

Local results are increasingly read by AI features, and Google wants listing data it can trust as fact. A description full of sales language is noise to a system trying to answer "dentist near me open now". Clean, factual profiles are also easier to rank consistently, which is why the businesses that comply tend to see steadier visibility rather than a drop.

The compliant way to keep momentum

With promotions out of the listing, the two things that still move a Dubai business up the Maps results are the ones customers create: reviews and engagement. Make it easy for every customer to leave a review at the end of a good visit with a Google Review NFC Stand with QR at the counter, and reply to every review you receive. Offer nothing in return, ask everyone the same way, and let the stars do the selling that your description no longer can. For the wider picture, see our Google review card UAE guide.

What we do not know yet

Google gave no enforcement date and has not said whether existing listing text will be edited or removed automatically, or whether profiles will be suspended on first offence. The safe assumption is that enforcement starts quietly through the suggested-edits and suspension systems already in place. Cleaning your profile now costs ten minutes; recovering a suspended profile can take weeks.
