Google Business Profile Optimization in the UAE: A 2026 Checklist for Dubai and Abu Dhabi Businesses

STSmaacaad Team · 7 Oct 2026 · 11 min read

If you want a quick answer to Google Business Profile optimization in the UAE, it is this: choose the right primary category, keep your name, address, hours and phone number exactly accurate, verify the profile, add real photos, and then earn a steady flow of genuine reviews that you reply to. Everything else is detail. The rest of this guide turns that answer into a checklist you can work through in an afternoon, with notes on what is different for businesses in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Nothing here is a trick. Google says plainly in its Business Profile help that there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. What you can do is give Google complete, accurate information and give customers a reason to trust you. That is also what the best-known local ranking research points to, and we will use named sources for every claim so you can check them yourself.

Google Business Profile optimization starts with the panel, not your website

For most local businesses in the UAE, the first impression is not your website. It is the panel that appears when someone searches your name, or the map result when they search "dentist near me" from a car on Sheikh Zayed Road. That panel shows your rating, photos, opening hours, a call button and directions.

Google explains local ranking with three words: relevance, distance and prominence. In its Business Profile help article on improving your local ranking, it defines relevance as how well a profile matches what someone is searching for, distance as how far each business is from the person searching, and prominence as how well known a business is. It adds that more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking. You cannot change distance, because your premises are where they are. You can improve relevance (accurate, complete information) and prominence (reviews, photos, activity).

The Whitespark Local Search Ranking Factors report, published in November 2025 as the 2026 edition and based on a survey of local SEO specialists, ranks the individual factors for the map results. Its top five are the primary Google Business Profile category, the proximity of the address to the point of search, keywords in the business title, a physical address in the city being searched, and whether the business is open at the time of the search. Notice what that list contains: four of the five are things you control by filling in your profile correctly. This is why a checklist works.

Step 1: Claim and verify your profile

Search for your business on Google Maps. If a profile already exists because Google or a customer created it, claim it instead of creating a duplicate. Duplicates split your reviews and confuse customers. If you cannot find one, create it from the Google Business Profile manager.

Verification matters because Google's own help page says verifying tells Google you are authorised to represent the business, which makes it more likely to show up in results. Depending on your business, Google may offer a postcard, phone, email or a video verification. UAE business-setup guides describe the video route, where you film your signage, premises and equipment in one continuous walkthrough, as the most reliable option for local companies. Have your trade licence and your shopfront or office signage ready before you start recording, and make sure the business name you enter matches what is on the licence and signage.

Step 2: Get your business name, address and phone number exactly right

Google's guidelines say your name should reflect your real-world business name as used consistently on your storefront, website and stationery. It specifically rules out marketing taglines, store codes, phone numbers, URLs and extra keywords that are not part of the name. Whitespark's report does list keywords in the business title as a strong factor, which tempts owners to write "Best Cheap AC Repair Dubai" as their name. Do not. Google can suspend profiles for it, and a suspended profile ranks nowhere.

For the address, Google requires a precise, accurate location. P.O. boxes and mailboxes at remote locations are not acceptable, and virtual offices do not qualify unless they have clear signage, receive customers during business hours and have staff there. If you do not receive customers at your licence address, set up as a service-area business instead. Google says a service-area business radius should not extend farther than about two hours of driving time from where the business is based, which in the UAE covers most of the country anyway, but keep your areas realistic: list the emirates and neighbourhoods you actually serve.

Step 3: Choose the right primary category

This is the single most important field on the profile. In the Whitespark report the primary category ranks first among all local pack factors. Google's guidance says to use as few categories as possible to describe your core business, and to choose what the business is rather than what it offers.

A practical way to choose: open Google Maps in a private browser window, search for the main phrase customers would use, and look at the categories the top three competitors show (the category label appears under the business name). If a dental clinic that outranks you uses "Dental clinic" as the primary and "Cosmetic dentist" as a secondary, copy that structure if it fits your business. Then add secondary categories only for things that are genuinely a significant part of what you do. A salon that also does bridal makeup can add a bridal category; a salon that sells one shampoo brand should not add "Cosmetics store".

  • Primary category: the one thing you are, in Google's own wording.
  • Secondary categories: two to four, only if they are real services.
  • Do not: add categories for products you merely stock, or categories that do not describe your premises.

Step 4: Set accurate opening hours (with one exception)

Whitespark's report places "business is open at time of search" in its top five factors, and says it climbed sharply after a change observed in December 2023. In plain terms, if you are closed when someone searches, you can be shown less. So your hours need to be right, including Friday prayer-time breaks if you close for them, Ramadan hours, and Eid closures. Set special hours for public holidays ahead of time rather than correcting them after complaints.

There is one exception worth knowing. Google's guidelines say some businesses should not list hours, and the examples include indoor lodging such as hotels and motels. If you run a hotel or serviced apartment, leave the hours field the way Google's guidelines intend. For restaurants, gyms, clinics, salons and shops, fill in hours for every day and keep them current.

Step 5: Complete every attribute and service field

Google's help page says businesses with complete and accurate information are more likely to show up in local search results. Go through every field that applies to you:

  • Services and products: list the services you offer with short plain descriptions. For a clinic, list each treatment. For a restaurant, link your menu.
  • Attributes: wheelchair access, women-only hours, outdoor seating, Wi-Fi, parking, prayer room and similar details people filter by in the UAE.
  • Description: write a clear paragraph, in natural language, that says what you do, where, and for whom. No phone numbers, no promotions and no capital letters for emphasis.

Step 6: Add real, current photos and short videos

Photos are visible proof that your business exists and looks the way you say. Whitespark's report lists photo and video quality among the review and profile signals that matter, and Google's help page recommends photos and videos to show what you offer. Aim for these shots, taken on a recent phone with good light:

  1. Exterior in daylight, from the direction customers approach, so they recognise the entrance (useful in malls and towers where entrances are hard to find).
  2. Interior, reception and seating areas.
  3. Your team at work, with permission from staff.
  4. Your main products or finished work.
  5. A short walkthrough video of 30 seconds or so.

Avoid stock images and heavily edited shots. Customers can tell. Add new photos regularly: a monthly batch is easy to sustain. We discussed why an active profile outperforms a dormant one in this earlier article.

Step 7: Earn Google reviews the right way

Reviews are the part of the profile you cannot fill in yourself, and they are the part most owners get wrong. Here is what the evidence says.

BrightLocal's Local Consumer Review Survey 2026, which polled 1,002 US adults, found that 97% of consumers read reviews for local businesses, 74% look for reviews written in the last three months, and 31% will only use a business rated 4.5 stars or higher, up from 17% the year before. It also found that 80% are more likely to use a business that responds to all its reviews, while half are put off by generic, templated replies. These are US figures, so treat them as a direction rather than a UAE measurement, but the pattern of recency, rating and replies is consistent with what Google's help page says about managing reviews.

Google's Maps user-contributed content policy sets the boundaries. It says reviews posted because of an incentive offered by a business will be removed, and that businesses must not selectively solicit positive reviews or discourage negative ones. It also forbids requiring customers to leave reviews while on site. So the compliant approach is to make the request equally available to everyone, with no reward and no pressure, and make it easy.

That is exactly where a tap-to-review card helps: the customer chooses whether and when to use it, and the link goes straight to your Google review form, so there is no searching for your business. A Google Review NFC Card with QR costs AED 29 per piece on our live product list, and the stand version, the Google Review NFC Stand with QR, is AED 59 per piece. For one of each, the Google Review Combo (1 stand + 2 cards, QR) is AED 88.

For the rules in detail, read our guide to compliant review collection, and for how many reviews you realistically need, see why a steady 8 to 10 a month beats a one-week push.

Step 8: Reply to every review within a few days

Google says replying to reviews shows customers you value their feedback, and BrightLocal's 2026 survey found most consumers prefer businesses that reply. A good reply is short, specific and human. Thank the customer by first name, mention one detail from their visit, and sign with your name. For a negative review, apologise for the specific problem, say what you will do, and offer a contact route offline. Never argue, and never offer a discount in exchange for removing a review, because that breaches the policy against incentives.

Step 9: Keep the profile alive

Treat the profile as a small publication, not a one-off form. Once a month, add new photos, check hours for upcoming holidays, and review your services list. Note that Google has retired the old Q&A box on profiles and replaced it with answers that draw on your profile data and reviews. We explained what that means in this post on the Q&A change. The practical lesson is that your description, services and reviews now do the answering for you, so keep them accurate.

Frequently asked questions

How long does Google Business Profile optimization take?

The setup checklist above takes a few hours if your documents and photos are ready. Verification can take longer, depending on the method Google offers. Ongoing work is about fifteen minutes a week for replies and an hour a month for photos and checks.

Is Google Business Profile free in the UAE?

Yes. Creating and managing a profile is free. Google's help page also states that there is no way to pay for a better local ranking. Be wary of agencies that promise guaranteed top positions for a fee.

Can I put my Arabic and English names on the profile?

Follow Google's rule that the name should reflect the real-world name used consistently on your storefront and stationery. If your signage shows both languages, reflect that. Do not add extra words, services or keywords to either version.

Do reviews on Tripadvisor or Booking.com help my Google ranking?

They help customers decide, and Whitespark's report lists third-party review signals as lesser factors than native Google reviews. For hotels and restaurants, collect on each platform in the way its rules allow, and do not copy one platform's requests onto another.

What is the fastest compliant way to get more Google reviews?

Make the review form one tap away for every customer, ask everyone, offer nothing in return, and reply to what comes in. A tap-to-review card or stand at the counter or handover point does this without pressure.

The bottom line on Google Business Profile optimization in the UAE

Google Business Profile optimization in the UAE is mostly careful housekeeping: accurate facts, the right category, real photos and a steady stream of honest reviews with replies. If the review part is your weak spot, a Google Review NFC Card with QR at AED 29 gives customers a one-tap route to your review form, and you can compare formats in our card, sticker and stand guide. Start with the checklist, finish the free steps first, and only then decide what to buy.
