UAE Advertiser Permit Explained: Why Owners Promoting Their Own Brand Are Exempt, and What to Do About Instagram
If you run a cafe, salon or shop in Dubai, you have probably heard that you now need a permit to post on social media. The reality is more specific, and for most small businesses it is good news. This guide explains the UAE advertiser permit in plain terms and shows how to keep growing your Instagram following without paying influencers.
What the advertiser permit actually says
According to Khaleej Times (published 2 August 2025), the UAE Media Council announced the permit on 30 July. The paper reports that anyone who shares advertisements, whether paid or not, on social media platforms, websites or apps needs the permit. It is valid for one year and renewable, it is free for the first three years, and it became mandatory within three months of the announcement.
The exemption most owners miss
The same report says business owners do not need the permit if they are only promoting their own business or project. If you hire someone else to advertise for you, that person must hold the permit. So the key question is not "am I posting about my business?" but "am I paying or asking a third party to advertise for me?"
- You post on your own business account about your own products: exempt, according to the Khaleej Times report.
- You pay an influencer to promote you: the influencer needs the permit.
- You are unsure about your licence activity: check with the UAE Media Council or your licensing authority, because the same report notes applicants need a licence that allows digital or social media marketing.
This is a summary of a news report, not legal advice. Rules can change, so confirm on the official UAE Media Council channels before you build a marketing plan on it.
Growing Instagram followers without a middleman
If influencer deals are not part of your plan, the cheapest source of new followers is the customer already standing in your shop. The problem is friction: a customer has to open Instagram, search your name, find the right account among lookalikes and tap follow. Most never do.
An NFC follow card removes those steps. The customer taps their phone on the card or scans the QR code and lands directly on your Instagram profile, ready to follow. There is no app to install for the card itself and nothing to type.
How to use a follow card well
- Put it at the moment of goodwill. The till, the table after dessert, the end of a haircut.
- Say one sentence. "We post daily specials on Instagram, tap here to follow." Give a reason, not just an instruction.
- Keep a QR code on the card. Not every customer knows to tap. A printed QR gives a second route.
- Check the profile first. Make sure your bio, link and the latest posts look current before you send people there.
Which Smaacaad product fits
For one counter, the Instagram NFC Follow Card with QR is AED 29 per piece at the time of writing. If you want a free-standing display next to the till, the Instagram NFC Follow Stand with QR is AED 59 per piece. Prices are taken from our live product list and can change, so check the product page before ordering.
The honest limits
A follow card does not make people engage. It only makes following easy. Followers still come back for good content, so post regularly and respond to comments. Also, a card is not a licence to ignore the permit rules: if you start paying others to promote you, the exemption above no longer applies to them.
