Meta Business Agent Is Now Answering WhatsApp Chats for a Million Businesses — It Still Needs Someone to Start the Conversation

STSmaacaad Team · 25 Sep 2026 · 3 min read

Meta confirmed on June 3, 2026 that its AI customer-service tool, now branded Meta Business Agent, is live globally on WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram — and that more than one million businesses are already using one. The announcement came at Meta’s Conversations conference in London, and it matters more for WhatsApp than for the other two apps, because WhatsApp is where most UAE businesses actually take orders, book appointments and answer questions in the first place.

What the agent actually does

According to Meta, a Business Agent can be set up in minutes and, once connected to a WhatsApp Business account, will:

  • Answer business-specific questions using the details you give it
  • Recommend products or services from your catalogue
  • Book appointments and qualify leads before a human gets involved
  • Reply in the customer’s own language, in your business’s tone
  • Hand the conversation to a real staff member the moment it gets complicated

Meta says these agents already sit across more than one billion active daily chat threads between businesses and customers on its apps. It’s free to turn on right now, with paid tiers for higher usage coming later this year.

Why this is a bigger deal in the UAE than the headline suggests

In a lot of markets, WhatsApp is one channel among several. In the UAE, for a huge share of salons, clinics, home-based food businesses, retailers and service providers, it effectively is the front desk — the number on the sign, the way bookings happen, the place a customer sends a screenshot of what they want. A tool that can competently answer "are you open Friday," "do you have this in blue," or "can I book 5pm" without a human typing back at midnight solves a real, specific pain point: missed messages while the shop is closed, busy, or short-staffed.

That's genuinely useful. But an AI agent, however good, only ever gets to work once a customer has actually opened a chat with the correct WhatsApp Business number. That step — getting from "I want to contact this business" to an open chat window — is still entirely manual almost everywhere, and it's where most of the friction actually lives.

The step Meta didn't automate

Think about how a customer normally gets into your WhatsApp chat today: they read a number off a sign, a receipt, or a business card, then type all eleven digits into their phone by hand, hoping they didn't fat-finger a digit. Some give up. Some end up messaging a personal number instead of the business one. None of that changes because the agent on the other end got smarter.

This is exactly the gap a WhatsApp NFC Chat Card (AED 29 per pc) is built for. A customer taps the card on their phone – or scans the QR code if their phone doesn't do NFC – and it opens a chat with your exact business number already loaded, no typing, no wrong digit, no guessing which number is the real one. For a counter, a reception desk, or a delivery box insert, a WhatsApp NFC Chat Stand (AED 59 per pc) does the same job standing on its own next to a till or a menu.

Put an AI agent that answers instantly behind a chat that's genuinely one tap away, and the two upgrades compound: fewer customers give up trying to reach you, and the ones who do get through no longer have to wait for someone to be free to reply.

The practical takeaway

If you already run WhatsApp Business, turning on a Business Agent this week costs nothing and takes minutes — there's little reason not to try it for the routine questions that eat up staff time. But don't stop at the software. The smarter the reply gets, the more the entry point into that conversation is worth fixing too, and it's usually the cheaper problem to solve.
