WhatsApp Is Rolling Out Usernames in 2026 — Why Your Counter Still Needs a One-Tap Way to Chat

STSmaacaad Team · 23 Sep 2026 · 4 min read

If you run a business on WhatsApp in the UAE — and almost every business here does, from salons to real estate offices to restaurants taking delivery orders — a quiet but significant change has been rolling out through 2026: WhatsApp usernames. Reservations opened the week of 30 June 2026, and the platform has been rolling the feature out to more countries and accounts "over the coming months" since, with users notified as it reaches them.

The idea is simple. Instead of a customer needing your exact phone number to start a chat, they can message @yourbusiness instead. WhatsApp has been explicit about one thing, though: this is not a searchable directory. As the company put it when describing the feature, “there's no directory to browse and no suggestions — people will need to know your exact username to contact you for the first time.” That line matters more than it sounds like it should.

What's actually changing for businesses

A few specifics are worth knowing if you manage a business account:

  • Phone numbers aren't going away. They're still required for WhatsApp Business API registration and onboarding — usernames sit on top as an extra way to be found, not a replacement.
  • Businesses can often pre-claim a matching handle. Meta has been pre-reserving usernames based on a verified display name, Facebook Page, or Instagram business handle, so brands that are already consistent across platforms have a head start.
  • It's a branding move as much as a privacy one. For regular users, the headline benefit is hiding your phone number from strangers on first contact. For businesses, the practical benefit is a cleaner, more memorable identity than a string of digits.
  • Claim it early. Usernames are unique per account, first-come, so a business that waits risks a competitor or an unrelated account sitting on the name customers would naturally try first.

If you haven't already, it's worth five minutes in Meta Business Suite or WhatsApp Manager to reserve your business's username now, before the rollout finishes reaching every market and every account claims theirs.

The part that doesn't get fixed by a username

Here's the detail that's easy to miss in the coverage of this update: WhatsApp explicitly did not build a directory. A customer standing at your reception desk, at your salon chair, or scanning your restaurant's table card still can't search "best tailor near me" inside WhatsApp and find you. They need to already know your exact handle, type it correctly, and start the chat themselves — every single time, for every single customer, with zero margin for a typo or a half-remembered spelling.

That's exactly the gap a physical one-tap touchpoint closes, and it's why it matters more now, not less. A customer who taps their phone against an NFC card or scans a QR code doesn't need to know your username, your phone number, or how to spell either one — the chat just opens, pre-filled and ready to send. Smaacaad's WhatsApp NFC Chat Card with QR (AED 29) does exactly this from a card in your hand, your wallet, or handed across a counter, working on both NFC-tap and QR-scan so it doesn't matter what phone the customer is holding. For a reception desk, checkout counter, or storefront, the branded WhatsApp NFC Chat Stand with QR + Logo (AED 89) puts the same one-tap chat next to your till with your logo on it, and both ship pre-programmed with a dashboard to update the destination link any time — including the day your new @username goes live and you want every tap or scan to route through it.

What to actually do about it

For UAE business owners, this update is a two-step job, not a one-step one:

  • Claim your username now in Meta Business Suite or WhatsApp Manager, matching your Instagram or Facebook handle if you can, before the rollout finishes and someone else takes it.
  • Keep a physical, one-tap way to start the chat at every point a customer actually stands in front of your business — because a memorable handle only helps the person who already remembers it, and a tap or scan works for everyone else.

Usernames make WhatsApp a little more like a brand and a little less like a phone book. That's a genuine improvement. It just doesn't replace the moment-of-truth problem every UAE business already has — getting a customer from "I want to ask this business something" to an open chat window, with nothing to remember and nothing to type.
