WhatsApp Business Pricing in the UAE: Why a Chat the Customer Starts Is the Cheapest One

STSmaacaad Team · 10 Oct 2026 · 3 min read

If you are weighing up WhatsApp Business pricing in the UAE, the most useful number to know is zero: Meta's pricing documentation says that replies you send while a customer-started conversation is open can be free. The cost appears when you start the conversation. That difference decides how you should collect chats in a Dubai shop, salon or restaurant.

What Meta's pricing page says

According to Meta's WhatsApp Business Platform pricing documentation, when a customer messages you, a 24-hour customer service window opens. Inside that window:

  • Non-template messages (ordinary text or image replies) are free.
  • Utility templates sent inside the open window are free and do not count toward volume tiers.
  • Once the window closes, you can only reach the customer with a pre-approved template message, and template messages are where per-message charges apply.

The same page also records that AED was added as a billing currency on 1 April 2026, so UAE businesses on the platform can be billed in dirhams. It does not list the actual UAE rates on the page; those are in Meta's downloadable rate card, so check it for current figures before budgeting. The page also notes that marketing message rates for the UAE were raised on 1 October 2025.

These rules describe the WhatsApp Business Platform (the API route that CRM and chatbot providers use). If you only use the free WhatsApp Business app on a phone, check the terms of that app separately.

Why this matters for a physical business

Many UAE businesses pay a provider to blast marketing templates to old customer lists. Those messages cost money per send and can be ignored. A chat the customer starts is different: they asked, you answer, and Meta's documentation treats those replies inside the window as free. So the cheaper habit is to make it easy for customers to start the chat themselves.

How to get customers to start the chat

  • Put a scan-or-tap point where people wait: the reception desk, the till, the table, the delivery bag.
  • Pre-fill the first message with one clear purpose, such as "I would like to book for 4 tonight".
  • Reply inside 24 hours so the window is still open and your answer stays free; keep a rota so someone owns the inbox.
  • Use an opening-hours auto-reply for questions that arrive after closing.

Where a card fits

A printed number is easy to mistype and a QR code on a window is easy to miss. An NFC chat card carries your WhatsApp link behind a tap, with a QR printed on it as a backup, so a customer can start a conversation in a couple of seconds. The WhatsApp NFC Chat Card with QR is AED 29 per piece, and the WhatsApp NFC Chat Stand with QR is AED 59 per piece at the time of writing. Check the product pages for current prices.

The card does not change what Meta charges. It simply makes it easier for the customer to be the one who starts, which is the cheapest kind of conversation.

A simple monthly check

  • Count how many new chats began from the card or QR.
  • Note how many received a reply inside 24 hours.
  • If you use a provider, compare their invoice to the rate card and ask which messages were templates.

Customers share their phone number when they message you, so use it only for the conversation they started and follow WhatsApp's business policies and applicable data-protection rules.
