WhatsApp NFC Card: One-Tap Click-to-Chat for UAE Businesses
A WhatsApp NFC card lets a customer start a chat with your business by tapping their phone on a card or stand, or scanning the QR code printed beside the chip. The chip holds a click-to-chat link, usually in the form https://wa.me/971XXXXXXXXX, so the customer lands in a WhatsApp conversation with you without saving your number or typing it. This guide explains how those links are built for UAE numbers, how to add a pre-filled message, which number to use, what UAE rules to keep in mind, and what to do on the day it arrives.
How a WhatsApp click-to-chat link works
WhatsApp documents a simple link format, often called click to chat. According to help articles from messaging providers such as Dotdigital and Wati, the format is https://wa.me/<number>, where the number is the full phone number in international format. When someone opens the link, WhatsApp opens a chat with that number. You can add a message by putting ?text= at the end and writing the text in URL-encoded form. The same guides stress that the link only pre-fills the message. Nothing is sent until the customer presses send.
So the whole job of the NFC chip, or the QR code, is to hold that link. When the phone reads the chip or scans the code, it opens the link, and WhatsApp does the rest.
Writing the link correctly for a UAE number
This is where most mistakes happen. The rules are mechanical:
- Start from the full number with the country code: UAE is 971.
- Drop the leading zero from the local part. A mobile written locally as 050 123 4567 becomes 50 123 4567.
- Remove plus signs, spaces, dashes and brackets.
- Join them: country code plus the number without the zero.
Using a made-up example, 050 123 4567 becomes 971501234567, and the link becomes https://wa.me/971501234567. The guides list these as wrong: a plus sign after wa.me/, leading zeros after the country code, dashes or brackets. A link with any of these can open an error screen, and a printed card with a wrong link is a wasted card. Always test the link on a phone before ordering.
Adding a pre-filled message
A pre-filled message does two useful things. It saves the customer typing, and it tells you where the enquiry came from. For a link with a message, replace spaces with %20. For example:
https://wa.me/971501234567?text=Hi%20I%20would%20like%20to%20book%20an%20appointment
Ideas for a message that works:
- Booking: "Hi, I would like to book an appointment."
- Menu or catalogue: "Hi, please send me the price list."
- Source tracking: "Hi, I scanned your counter card" or "Hi, I saw your stand at the exhibition". You can create different cards with different messages to see which placement brings enquiries.
- Delivery: "Hi, I need help with my order."
Keep it short and neutral. A long, salesy pre-fill reads like a script, and customers often edit it anyway. For printing, avoid special characters that need complicated encoding. If you want Arabic text, test it on a real phone because encoding mistakes show up as unreadable characters.
Meta's own WhatsApp Business Platform also offers QR codes and short links with pre-filled messages, with limits we summarised in our WhatsApp QR codes and short links guide. Those require the platform setup. A plain wa.me link works with any WhatsApp number, including one on the WhatsApp Business app.
Which number should the card point to?
This is a business decision before it is a technical one.
- A personal number is risky. If the owner's personal WhatsApp is on the card, every enquiry mixes with family chats, and when the person leaves the business you lose the number.
- A dedicated business number is better. Many UAE businesses use a separate SIM for WhatsApp. It can be shared across staff devices, and the number stays with the business.
- The WhatsApp Business app is the practical option for small teams. Infobip and Hoola describe it as a free app for small businesses, with a business profile (address, hours, website), quick replies, away messages, labels and a catalogue. It supports one primary phone plus up to three linked devices, according to those comparisons.
- The WhatsApp Business Platform is for volume. It is designed for medium and large businesses, usually via a provider, and charges per conversation. A UAE-specific change in business message rates is covered in our post on WhatsApp's UAE business rates.
For a card, a click-to-chat link to a Business app number is usually enough. You can always change the destination later if you move to the platform, which we explain below.
UAE rules to keep in mind
A customer who taps your card and sends you a message has started the conversation, which is the opposite of unsolicited marketing. Still, a few UAE points are worth knowing. None of this is legal advice.
- Replying is fine, marketing to lists needs consent. Law firm summaries of UAE Federal Decree-Law No. 45 of 2021 say marketing use of personal data requires clear, specific consent and an opt-out. A phone number is personal data, so if you want to send promotions later, ask the customer in the chat and keep the reply.
- Telemarketing rules reach messaging apps. Summaries of Cabinet Decision No. 56 of 2024 from sources such as Gulf News and the SMS compliance guide at sent.dm say that telemarketing, including messages sent through social media apps for marketing, needs approval from the regulator, the TDRA. Check the current rules before starting broadcast campaigns to people who did not contact you.
- WhatsApp's own policy. Meta's developer documentation says businesses must obtain opt-in before messaging people, and that the opt-in must clearly say the business name and that the person agrees to receive messages. A customer sending you a message first opens a service conversation, but marketing broadcasts need opt-in.
- Do not give your staff's personal numbers on a card. Staff leave. A shared business number keeps the customer relationship with the business.
How a WhatsApp NFC card is set up with Smaacaad
Smaacaad's WhatsApp range is listed under Contact Products. The WhatsApp NFC Chat Card with QR is AED 29 per piece. The stand version, the WhatsApp NFC Chat Stand with QR, is AED 59. QR + Logo versions of the card and the stand are AED 79 and AED 89. There is also a WhatsApp Combo of one stand and two cards (QR) at AED 88. Prices are from the live product list at the time of writing.
The product page says you tap or scan the card to open the setup screen, add your WhatsApp chat link and click Save. You can update the link later from the management dashboard. Smaacaad's FAQ adds that the chip stores only the destination link, with no personal data, that there is no monthly fee, and that orders ship express within the UAE. Cards are 85 mm by 55 mm PVC, and stands are 14 cm by 12 cm.
That means if you replace the business SIM, switch to a WhatsApp Business Platform number, or want a different pre-filled message, you do not need new cards. You update the link.
Where to put a WhatsApp NFC card or stand
- Reception or service desk. For bookings and questions that would otherwise take a phone call.
- Checkout. For reorders, warranty claims or product questions after purchase.
- Delivery bags and parcels. For support after the sale.
- Your van, shopfront or property signage. A QR on a sign lets people message you outside opening hours. For this a QR sticker or stand is more practical than a hand-out card.
- Trade shows and events. See our guide to NFC cards for events in Dubai.
Customers want chat, but only if you answer
A WhatsApp card creates an expectation of a fast answer. If messages sit unread for two days, the card makes your business look worse, not better. Before printing:
- Decide who watches the number and during which hours.
- Turn on an away message in the WhatsApp Business app for out-of-hours.
- Write three quick replies: greeting, price list, location and hours.
- Add the hours to the card or stand if you can, so expectations are clear.
Meta has also been rolling out automated agents for business chats. See our post on Meta's business agent. They need a conversation to start, which is exactly what a tap does. And with WhatsApp usernames being introduced, a one-tap link remains useful, as we discuss in why your counter still needs a one-tap way to chat.
A five-minute test before you order
Because the link is printed and programmed once, spend five minutes on checks first. Open the finished link on an iPhone and an Android phone. Confirm that the chat opens with your business name, that the pre-filled message reads correctly and that the number is the one you want customers to reach. Then ask a colleague to scan the QR version from a printed page, not from a screen, because glare and small print are what break QR codes in real shops. Smaacaad shows a design proof before production, so use that moment to check the spelling of your business name and any printed text as well. Once production starts, mistakes in what you supplied are not refundable under their policy, although the destination link itself can still be changed afterwards.
Common mistakes
- Plus sign or leading zero in the link. Test before printing.
- Using a landline or a number not registered on WhatsApp. The link only works if the number has WhatsApp.
- Sending customers to a number nobody reads.
- Mass messaging people who only tapped once. Ask for opt-in first.
- Putting the card where there is no phone signal. In basement units or some mall corridors, a chat link needs data to open. Test it in place.
Our recommendation
If your business sells through conversation (services, bookings, custom orders, quotes), a WhatsApp NFC card is probably the most useful of the NFC products, because the next step after a tap is a real conversation. Use a dedicated business number, keep the pre-filled message short, and treat opt-in properly. If most of your business is walk-in retail with little need for follow-up, a review or Instagram card may suit you better.
Next step: look at the WhatsApp NFC Chat Card with QR, or the stand if you want it sitting on the counter.
Frequently asked questions
What is a WhatsApp NFC card?
It is a card or stand with an NFC chip and a printed QR code that both hold a WhatsApp click-to-chat link. A customer taps the card or scans the code and a chat with your number opens, ready for them to send a message.
How do I write a wa.me link for a UAE number?
Use https://wa.me/ followed by 971 and your mobile number without the leading zero and without spaces, dashes or a plus sign. For example, 050 123 4567 becomes https://wa.me/971501234567. Test the link on a phone before ordering.
Can the customer start a chat without saving my number?
Yes. The link opens a chat with your number directly. The customer does not need to add you to their contacts first, and nothing is sent until they press send.
Can I change the WhatsApp number on the card later?
Yes. Per Smaacaad's product page and FAQ, you can update the link from the dashboard or by messaging them, so a new number does not mean new cards.
Do I need the WhatsApp Business API for this?
No. A plain click-to-chat link works with a regular WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business app number. The Business Platform is for high-volume messaging through a provider and is not needed for a card.
