Abu Dhabi Healthy Menu Mandate Is Live: What Restaurants Should Check
The Abu Dhabi healthy menu mandate took effect on Thursday, 1 October 2026. According to The National (1 October 2026), restaurants in hotels and tourist areas in Abu Dhabi must now include healthy options on their menus, using criteria approved under the SEHHI scheme. If you run a restaurant, café or hotel outlet anywhere in the UAE, it is a useful moment to look at how quickly you can change your menu.
What the mandate requires, as reported
The National reports the following:
- Each menu category must include at least one healthy item that meets the approved SEHHI criteria (low in fat, sugar and salt, and higher in nutritional value).
- On children’s menus, at least half of the listed items must meet those criteria.
- Healthy items must be clearly identified on the menu with the approved SEHHI logo.
- Labelling guidance comes from the Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre. The requirement is part of an agreement between Abu Dhabi’s Department of Culture and Tourism and the government-led Healthy Living strategy.
- An implementation period began on 1 July, giving a three-month grace period that has now ended.
The article does not state penalties or name the enforcing body, so we cannot tell you what a breach would cost. It also applies to hotels and tourist areas in Abu Dhabi, not to every restaurant in the UAE. A Dubai café is not covered by this rule. Check with the authority that licenses your outlet if you are unsure.
Why a printed menu makes this harder
Our reading, not a rule: a mandate like this means going through every category, finding or creating a qualifying dish, adding the logo, and checking the children’s menu split. On a printed menu that is a reprint, and every later change to a dish is another reprint. With a laminated card or a PDF you cannot easily fix one line on a busy Friday.
The same problem comes up with allergen details, Ramadan menus and price changes. The pattern is simple: the fewer places your menu is stored, the less likely a guest sees an old version.
A practical checklist for restaurant owners
- Check whether you are in scope. Hotel and tourist-area outlets in Abu Dhabi are the ones named. Ask your licensing authority if you are not sure.
- Count categories. List every category (starters, mains, desserts, drinks) and mark which has a candidate healthy item.
- Get the criteria in writing. Use the official SEHHI criteria and logo from the authority. Do not label a dish healthy on your own judgement.
- Review the children’s menu. Count items against the half-of-all-items rule.
- Keep one live menu. Make sure the version on the table, on your website and on your Google profile all match.
- Brief your staff. Servers should know which dishes carry the label and what is in them.
Where a live digital menu helps, and where it does not
Our Digital Menu Card (AED 29 per card, from the current product listing) is an NFC and QR card that opens your menu on dm-only.com. Per the product page, you edit, preview and publish from your phone, mark dishes sold out or hidden, and give each dish its own page with a description and options. That means a label or a new healthy dish can go live without reprinting.
It does not do the compliance work for you. It does not certify a dish, supply the SEHHI logo, or tell you whether you are in scope. You still need the official criteria. What it gives you is a way to make changes quickly once you have them, and the same QR, NFC tap and link open one menu.
If guests also find you through Google, a Google review NFC card (AED 29 per card) is a separate, simple way to ask happy diners for a review, but it has nothing to do with the mandate.
The bottom line
The Abu Dhabi healthy menu mandate is narrow in scope, but it shows how quickly menu rules can change. Work out whether it applies to you, get the official criteria, and keep your menu in a form you can change in minutes.
