NFC Tags in Dubai: What to Write on One, Where They Fail and When a Plate Is the Better Buy
If you search for NFC tags in Dubai, you will find bare chips, stickers and keyfobs sold by the pack. A tag is the cheapest way to make a surface tappable, but the tag alone is only half the job. This guide explains what a tag is, what to put on it, and when a printed card, plate or stand is the better choice for a UAE shop, cafe or clinic.
What an NFC tag actually is
The NFC Forum, the industry body that sets the standard, describes tags as contactless memory cards hosting a specially formatted data payload, stored as an NDEF record. In plain terms: a tiny chip holds a short message, such as a web link, a phone number, contact details or a Wi-Fi key, and a phone that touches it takes the related action. The Forum has defined five tag types that differ in protocol and data structure, but they behave the same way for the person tapping.
The same page notes a typical NFC range of up to 2 cm, so the customer has to touch or almost touch the tag. That is why placement matters more than anything else.
What to write on a business tag
- One link, one job. A Google review page, a WhatsApp chat, an Instagram profile or a menu. A tag that tries to do several things confuses customers.
- A link you can change later. Writing a plain, permanent address onto a chip means a wrong link needs a reprogram. A short redirect you control lets you fix it without touching the sticker.
- A visible fallback. Not every phone user knows to tap. A printed QR code and a short line such as "Tap here or scan" next to the tag turns a hidden feature into an obvious one.
Where bare tags go wrong in UAE businesses
- Metal and glass counters. Metal behind a tag can stop it being read. Check on the real surface before you stick a whole pack down.
- Nobody knows it is there. A blank sticker under a till does not get tapped. Customers act on a clear call to action at eye level.
- Heat and wear. A tag stuck near a window or a hot kitchen pass can peel. A proper adhesive and a flat, clean surface help.
- Nothing to see afterwards. A bare pack gives you no overview of what is linked where. Without a dashboard you will not notice a tag pointing to an old page.
Tag, plate or stand: which one to choose
Use a bare tag when you only need to make an object tappable and you will print the artwork yourself, for example inside a product box or under a table number.
Choose a ready-made plate or sticker when the customer needs to be told what to do. A printed design with a QR code and an NFC chip in one piece solves placement, instructions and the fallback together. For reviews, Smaacaad's Google Review NFC Plate Sticker with QR is a 12 x 12 cm self-adhesive plate that opens your Google review page, and the Google Review NFC Round Sticker with QR is a compact round version with a 3M adhesive backing. Both are programmed before they ship and come with a free management dashboard, so the link can be updated later.
Choose a stand or card when the item will be handed over or sits on a counter or table, where it can be seen from a seat.
A quick test before you buy a pack
- Tap the sample on both an iPhone and an Android phone.
- Test on the actual surface: wood, glass, metal or a wall.
- Ask a colleague who has never seen it to use it without help. If they hesitate, add a clearer label.
- Decide who will own the link. If it is an agency or a former employee, move it somewhere you control first.
Bottom line
NFC tags in Dubai are inexpensive and easy to find, but a tag is a component, not a customer journey. If you want customers to leave reviews, follow a page or message you, pick a finished product that explains itself and lets you change the link later.
