UAE Winter School Break 2026-27 (From 14 December): How Family-Friendly Cafes and Activity Venues Can Get Ready

STSmaacaad Team · 27 Oct 2026 · 3 min read

The UAE Ministry of Education calendar for 2026–27 lists the student winter break as 14 December 2026 to 1 January 2027, with teaching and administrative staff on break from 21 December. Gulf News reports that schools reopen on Monday 4 January 2027; one outlet describes the break as running until Sunday 3 January, so check with the individual school. The same coverage notes this break is shorter than last year’s four weeks, at about three weeks. The academic year runs from 31 August 2026 to 2 July 2027.

For cafes, restaurants, soft-play venues, tutors and family-focused shops, three weeks of children at home is the busiest and most unpredictable stretch of the winter. Here is how to be ready.

UAE winter break for family cafes: what changes

Weekday traffic starts to look like weekend traffic. Parents search on their phones for “kids friendly cafe near me” or “things to do with kids”, often on the same morning. They scan photos, opening hours and recent reviews, then pick the place that looks easy. Treat the weeks before 14 December as your preparation window.

Checklist for the next three weeks

  • Update your Google Business Profile. Set special hours for the break and public holidays, and add photos that show the family areas.
  • Review your menu for children. Add a clear kids’ section and mark allergens clearly. Dubai’s food code requires allergen information; see our summary of the menu allergen rules.
  • Plan staffing for daytime peaks. A midday rush on a normal Tuesday is the new normal for three weeks.
  • Decide how you will take bookings. Parents want a quick answer on whether you have space for a birthday or a group.

Keep the menu current without reprinting

Seasonal specials, sold-out items and children’s set meals change quickly during a school holiday. A printed menu cannot keep up. The Digital Menu Card opens your live menu on dm-only.com when a guest taps or scans, and you update items from your phone. If you are still deciding whether a digital menu fits your venue, read our guide to the QR menu statistics worth trusting.

Make booking enquiries a one-tap job

Parents ask the same things: price for a group, space on Saturday, and whether a pushchair fits. A WhatsApp NFC Chat Stand with QR at the entrance or till opens a chat on tap or scan, which suits a parent holding a child with one hand. Save replies for your top five questions so staff answer in seconds.

Ask for reviews from families, correctly

Holiday visitors include families from other emirates and tourists who do not know you. Reviews from the break will be what the next family reads in January. A Google Review NFC Card with QR can be handed with the bill, and a stand at the counter does the same job. Ask everyone, do not give a free dessert or discount in return for a review, and do not ask only the happy parents; our post on discount-linked reviews explains why Google removes them.

After 4 January

  • Reply to every review that came in over the break.
  • Note which days were busiest, so you can staff for next year’s calendar.
  • Switch the menu and hours back, and update the profile.
